Bank Restoration and Channel Restoration and Stabilization for Bendale Branch of Highland Creek West Branch at Ellesmere Road

Project Introduction

Business Unit: Geomorphic Solutions

Project Name: Channel Restoration of the Bendale Branch of West Highland Creek at Ellesmere Road

Client: City of Toronto

Duration of Project: Design 2005, Construction 2006

Location: Bendale Branch of Highland Creek West Branch at Ellesmere Road

Objective and Description

Objective: The City of Toronto retained Geomorphic Solutions and Sernas Associates to develop a stable channel design for a section of the Bendale Branch of West Highland Creek in Scarborough.  Erosion of the valley wall occurred in this area due to a significant storm event in the Toronto area on August 19, 2005.  An integrated bed and bank treatment was developed in a manner that recognized the large storm event hydraulics and matched geomorphic relations to ensure greater channel stability.  Effectiveness monitoring is ongoing.  This resulted in the restoration of the lost property, a more natural and stable channel, and improved aquatic habitat.

Disciplines Involved:

Geomorphic assessment

Natural channel design

Hydraulic modeling

Construction supervision
